- improvements in fine lines and skin texture in controlled facial studies
- better barrier resilience, meaning skin becomes less reactive to everyday stressors
Mechanism, simplified
Niacinamide is repeatedly described as helping with uneven tone by influencing how pigment is distributed (not only how it’s produced) and by supporting a calmer, more resilient barrier environment.
In formulations

4-hexylresorcinol (4-HR): why it’s worth attention
In the Shariff et al. study, 4-hexylresorcinol stood out in lab testing as a strong tyrosinase inhibitor compared with several classic brightening agents.
More importantly, the same paper didn’t stop at lab work. It moved into a human split-face trial comparing:
- a niacinamide-only formula, and
- the same formula with added 4-hexylresorcinol.
The combination side showed better improvement in the appearance of hyperpigmented spots than niacinamide alone, and it also showed additional improvements in visible signs commonly associated with ageing (like the look of fine lines and measures linked with firmness).
This shows that a two-pathway approach outperformed a single-pathway approach.

Retinoids: pigment support through turnover
Retinoids are a broad family of vitamin A-related compounds used for visible skin ageing and uneven tone.
