What Not to Mix With Glycolic Acid: Retinol, Vitamin C and More

Search for what not to mix with glycolic acid and you will find the same warning everywhere: do not use it with retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide, salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.

These ingredients should not be placed in one group. The reason for being careful with retinol is not the same as the reason an L-ascorbic acid serum may sting. Niacinamide does not even have a known conflict with glycolic acid.

The main problem is usually irritation. Glycolic acid may feel fine on its own. Your retinoid may also feel fine on its own. If you apply both in the same evening, you may wake with red, tight or flaky skin because both products can irritate it.

That does not mean the ingredients reacted and produced something dangerous on your face. It means your skin received more irritation than it could recover from.

What does mixing glycolic acid mean?

You may mean that you want to combine two products in your hand. I would not do this unless the instructions specifically tell you to. It is difficult to mix the same amount each time, and adding one formula to another can change how each product spreads and dries.

You may mean that you want to layer the products. In that situation, you apply the usual amount of glycolic acid and then apply the usual amount of another product. Your skin receives both within a few minutes.

You may also mean that you want to use both products in the same skincare routine, but on different days. This is often the best option. Your skin has time to recover, and if irritation starts after you add the second product, it is easier to identify what caused it.

The short answer

You can keep glycolic acid and a retinoid in the same routine, but I would use them on different nights at first. Both can cause dryness, stinging and peeling.

You can also use glycolic acid with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Again, the concern is irritation. Before combining them, decide whether both products are treating something your skin actually needs.

Pure vitamin C, or L-ascorbic acid, is usually in an acidic serum. If glycolic acid has already made your skin sore, that serum may burn when you apply it. Vitamin C derivatives are different ingredients and do not all need an equally acidic formula.

Niacinamide does not have a known glycolic acid incompatibility. If the two products feel comfortable, you do not need to separate them.

I would leave out facial scrubs and abrasive cleansing brushes. Glycolic acid is already loosening cells at the skin surface. Rubbing that surface can make the irritation worse.

Concentrated chemical peels are different from everyday glycolic acid products. Do not combine strong peels at home.

Why the percentage does not tell you how strong glycolic acid will feel

A 7% glycolic acid toner can irritate your skin more than a product labelled 10%.

The percentage tells you how much glycolic acid is in the formula. It does not tell you how acidic the finished product is. When the pH is lower, more glycolic acid is in the form that can enter the outer skin. A lower-pH product can therefore act more strongly, even when the percentage on the label is lower.

The type of product changes your exposure as well. You rinse a cleanser away with water after a short time. A toner or serum can remain on your skin for hours. Your skin does not receive the same exposure from these products, even if the labels show the same glycolic acid percentage.

How often you apply it also changes what you experience. Your skin may feel fine after the first use and begin to sting after the fourth. This happens when you apply glycolic acid again before the skin has fully recovered from the previous applications.

This is why I look at the percentage, pH, product type and frequency together. The number on the front of the bottle cannot answer the question on its own.

Can you use glycolic acid and retinol together?

Yes, but I would not start by applying them on the same night.

First, check which retinoid you use. Retinol, retinal and tretinoin are not three names for the same ingredient. Retinol needs two conversion steps in the skin before it becomes retinoic acid. Retinal needs one conversion step. Tretinoin is retinoic acid and is used as a medicine. These differences affect how strongly the product works and how likely it is to make your skin peel.

A study followed 1,709 people who used one cream containing 0.1% retinaldehyde and 6% glycolic acid for 90 days. Most of the participants tolerated the cream well. (Dréno et al., 2005)

The researchers tested one cream with fixed amounts of both ingredients, and most people tolerated that cream. It does not tell us that your glycolic acid toner will work well under your retinol serum. Layering two products gives your skin two complete formulas that were not tested together.

If you already use a retinoid, wait until your skin is comfortable with it before adding glycolic acid. Use glycolic acid on a different night and start with one application a week. If your skin becomes sore or starts peeling after you add it, stop the glycolic acid and let your skin recover.

If both products remain comfortable on separate nights, you can continue using them that way. You do not need to place them in the same evening to get results from both.

If prescription tretinoin is already making your skin sting or peel, do not add glycolic acid. Speak with your prescriber about the irritation before adding another product that can make it worse.

Can you use glycolic acid with vitamin C?

Yes, but first check which form of vitamin C is in your product.

Pure vitamin C appears in an ingredient list as ascorbic acid or L-ascorbic acid. In a laboratory study using pig skin, L-ascorbic acid entered the skin when the formula had a pH below approximately 3.5. This is why pure vitamin C serums are usually acidic. (Pinnell et al., 2001)

An acidic L-ascorbic acid serum can sting. If glycolic acid has already made your face sore, the serum may burn when you apply it. The two ingredients have not produced a dangerous reaction. You have applied an acidic serum to skin that is already irritated.

Vitamin C derivatives need a separate answer. Sodium ascorbyl phosphate and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, for example, do not need the same low pH as L-ascorbic acid. A moisturiser containing one of these derivatives may feel completely comfortable after glycolic acid. The words “vitamin C” on the front of the packaging do not tell you which type you have. Check the ingredient list. (Al-Niaimi and Chiang, 2017)

One study tested a melasma cream containing buffered glycolic acid with hydroquinone, vitamins C and E, and sunscreen. The cream improved melasma, but every ingredient was already included in that cream. It does not tell us what will happen when you apply a separate vitamin C serum over a separate glycolic acid product. (Guevara and Pandya, 2003)

If your L-ascorbic acid serum already stings when you use it alone, do not apply it after glycolic acid. Use the vitamin C in the morning and glycolic acid on selected evenings. If your skin still becomes sore, use them on different days or remove the glycolic acid.

If you use a comfortable moisturiser containing a vitamin C derivative, you do not need to separate it from glycolic acid simply because both products mention vitamin C.

Can you use niacinamide with glycolic acid?

Yes. I see no scientific reason to place niacinamide on a universal glycolic acid blacklist.

There is little direct research in which people applied a separate glycolic acid product and then layered a separate niacinamide serum over it. I would not promise that the combination gives better results. I have also found no evidence that ordinary layering creates a harmful mixture on your skin.

If your niacinamide serum feels comfortable after glycolic acid, you can use it. You do not need to wait between the products because of a claimed pH conflict.

If the niacinamide serum stings, stop and look at how your skin feels before you apply it. Glycolic acid may already have left the skin dry and sore. When this happens, even your usual cleanser or moisturiser may sting.

If you decide to use them at different times, do it because your skin feels better that way. You are not protecting the niacinamide from the acid.

Can you use glycolic acid and salicylic acid together?

You can, but I would first ask what you want each acid to do.

Salicylic acid dissolves more readily in oil and can enter sebum-rich follicles. I would usually choose it first when clogged pores and oily acne are the main concerns.

Glycolic acid dissolves in water and helps loosen the connections between older cells near the skin surface. I would be more likely to choose it when the skin feels rough or is shedding unevenly.

Studies have compared professionally applied glycolic acid and salicylic acid peels for acne, and both acids improved it. The researchers applied them as separate peels under controlled conditions. (Sharad, 2013)

Start with the acid that fits the problem you want to treat. If salicylic acid clears your clogged pores, adding glycolic acid may only leave your skin sore. If glycolic acid smooths the rough area, you do not need to add salicylic acid simply because it is another exfoliant.

If you have both clogged pores and rough surface texture, use one acid first. Once you know how your skin responds, you can add the second acid on a different day. If irritation begins after that change, you will know which product was newly added.

Can you use benzoyl peroxide with glycolic acid?

You can use both in an acne routine, but they can leave the skin dry and peeling when used together.

The retinaldehyde and glycolic acid study included people who continued other acne treatments, including benzoyl peroxide. Most participants tolerated their treatment. However, the retinaldehyde and glycolic acid were already combined in one cream. (Dréno et al., 2005)

Start with the product that has the clearest job in your routine. Benzoyl peroxide reduces Cutibacterium acnes and inflammatory acne lesions. If it is already improving your acne, ask what glycolic acid will add before you introduce it.

If you still want to use both, introduce them separately. Use them at different times or on different days. If your skin starts peeling after you add glycolic acid, remove it rather than continuing both and covering the peeling with more moisturiser.

When an acne routine makes your whole face sore, it becomes difficult to use the treatment consistently. Adding every ingredient associated with acne can therefore leave you with a less workable routine, not a better one.

Should you use a facial scrub with glycolic acid?

I would not.

Glycolic acid loosens the connections between cells at the skin surface. A scrub, rough cloth or cleansing brush then rubs across the same area. If the acid has already made the surface tender, that friction can make it redder and more painful.

You may be tempted to scrub when glycolic acid makes your skin flaky. The flakes may come off, so the skin looks smoother for a few hours. However, you may also remove cells that were still protecting the sore skin underneath.

Professional glycolic acid peel instructions advise people to avoid scrubs and other exfoliating treatments around the procedure. A low-strength toner is not equal to a professional peel. However, if your toner is already making your skin peel, adding friction is still damaging. (Sharad, 2013)

Use glycolic acid less often or stop until your skin feels comfortable. Do not scrub away the sign that you have used too much.

Do not combine glycolic acid with strong home peels

A glycolic acid toner and a concentrated chemical peel do not belong in the same home experiment.

In 2024, the US Food and Drug Administration warned against using certain high-concentration chemical peels without professional supervision. These products can cause chemical burns. A burn may then lead to infection, scarring or long-lasting changes in skin colour. The warning included glycolic acid peels containing 70% acid. (FDA, 2024)

You may find professional protocols that use glycolic acid with TCA or Jessner’s solution. A trained practitioner chooses the peel strength and controls how long it stays on the skin. The practitioner can also recognise a burn and treat it. This is not a method to copy at home.

Do not combine concentrated peels in your bathroom.

Do you need sunscreen if you use glycolic acid at night?

Yes.

The FDA advises that alpha-hydroxy acids can make skin more sensitive to ultraviolet radiation while you use them and for up to one week after you stop. This can make sunburn more likely. The FDA recommends sunscreen, protective clothing and less time in direct sun. (FDA AHA guidance)

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day, even if you used the glycolic acid night before, and reapply it when you spend time outdoors.

If you do not use sunscreen consistently, I would address that before adding another active product to your routine.

What should you do if glycolic acid burns?

If the burning continues after application, or your skin becomes red, flaky or painfully tight, stop using glycolic acid.

Do not continue applying the acid while moving your vitamin C and niacinamide to different days. Glycolic acid is already irritating your skin, so it needs to come out of the routine until your skin feels comfortable again.

Use a gentle cleanser and a plain moisturiser. Moisturiser can reduce water loss while the outer skin repairs, but it cannot cancel another application of glycolic acid.

Wait until your cleanser and moisturiser no longer sting before you restart active products. Then add them back one at a time. If glycolic acid caused the irritation, restart it less often or choose a gentler product.

Marked swelling, blistering, severe pain, weeping skin or changes in skin colour after a chemical peel need medical attention.

How I would add glycolic acid to a skincare routine

Keep the rest of your routine unchanged when you start glycolic acid. If you add three new products at once and your skin becomes irritated, it is hard to know which new product caused it.

Choose one evening when you are not using a retinoid, salicylic acid or another exfoliant. Apply the amount directed on the product and follow with moisturiser.

Start with one evening a week unless your prescriber or the product instructions give you a different schedule. Check how your skin feels the next morning, but keep checking after the next few applications as well.

Irritation can build over several days. Your skin may feel fine after the first use and begin to sting after the third because it has not fully recovered between applications.

Record each glycolic acid night in your phone if you are likely to forget. If your skin becomes sore after the third application, you can see how closely together you used the product. You do not have to blame the last serum you happened to apply.

Only increase the frequency if your skin remains comfortable. If you notice new tightness, stinging or flaking, return to the previous frequency. If the irritation continues, stop.

There is no single list of ingredients that everyone must avoid with glycolic acid.

Retinoids, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can all be used with glycolic acid in your routine. I would introduce each product separately because each one can add irritation. An acidic L-ascorbic acid serum may burn if glycolic acid has already made your skin sore. Niacinamide does not have a known conflict with glycolic acid.

Look at the exact products and give each one a clear job. If your skin becomes irritated after you add a new product, remove that product and let the skin recover. Adding more active ingredients will not repair irritation caused by the routine.
